Last week, a family member of a prospective student received a phone call asking for personal information, including a Social Security number, after providing an address and telephone number to a non-CCRI Web site that offers information about colleges across the country.

This matter has been referred to the Rhode Island State Police Computer Crime Unit, which is investigating the complaint, and the college has been informed by the Web site’s owners that the site in question has been disabled.

We want to remind all prospective students, students, faculty and staff that CCRI will never contact you by telephone or e-mail asking for sensitive personal information, including usernames, passwords and Social Security numbers. If you receive such a call, you should report it to the State Police Computer Crime Unit at 401-275-5100.
