How Do I change the settings for my browser to work with WebCT?
You will need to perform the following adjustments to optimize your browser for use with WebCT.
Enable Java:
You will need to have Java software installed in order for certain areas of WebCT to function properly. Follow these steps:
For Internet Explorer on a PC:
Get Java. Go the Sun Java site and click Download Java Software. Follow the online instructions.
In addition, you will need to perform the following adjustments:
- In your browser window, click on Tools in the menu bar.
- From the drop-down menu, select Internet Options.
- Click the on the Security tab.
- Click the Custom Level button.
- Scroll down to Java Permissions and choose Low, Medium, or High safety.
- Click OK
For Netscape on a Mac:
- Test for Java. See if you can load a java applet of this puzzle or this magic cube. We link to two applets because the sites are occasionally not available. If you cannot link to one, try the other.
- If you do not see the cube, you will need to download a Java update for Mac. For Mac OS 9 and earlier, you will need to download and install the MRJ 2.2. For Mac OS X, you will need to download and install Java 1.4.1 for Mac.
- In addition, you will need to perform the following adjustments:
- From your browser window, click on Edit.
- From the drop-down menu, select Preferences.
- Click on the "+" sign next to Advanced.
- Make sure that Enable Java and Enable JavaScript are both checked.
- Click OK
When trying to log in to WebCT I am sent to another website.
When you try to log into WebCT, rather than access WebCT you are taken to another web site such as Ask Jeeves web site (www.ask.com), Internet Optimizer, or some other strange site.
This occurs when spyware or parasiteware has been installed on your computer (without your knowledge). File sharing programs can install this kind of software during their installation process.
The following (or similar) messages appear:

Remove file sharing programs and spyware. To get rid of spyware, visit http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ and download the Ad Aware program which you will find under Products and selecting Ad-Aware Personal. After downloading and installing the program, run it and have it search your computer system. Ask it to remove anything it finds, exit the program and reboot the computer system. However, note that many free file sharing programs might not function if the spyware programs are removed. Another solution is to run Windows XP System Restore, and restore your system back to a time before the file sharing software was installed. Also: In Windows go to the Start menu and select Settings. Open the Control Panel and choose Add/Remove Programs.
Look for Active Alert and Internet Optimizer. If these entries are there, select Change Remove for each one in turn. Follow the steps to remove the program.
Why does my browser crash when I am accessing WebCT?
Your browser may not be suitable to access WebCT. Go to the Browser Tune-up page to see if you need to either update or configure your browser to work with the currently installed version of WebCT at CCRI (we are currently running WebCT version 4.1).
