Virus Prevention for Office Computers
There are two vital steps to ensure your Office PC is protected from viruses and worms.
Norton Antivirus software and updates
Most faculty and staff computers are protected from
viruses with the Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition software.
Norton Antivirus automatically checks for viruses as you open files and
programs and updates your virus definitions as they become available and
scans your had drive every Friday at noon.
To determine whether your PC has Norton AntiVirus and is configured for LiveUpdates, click on the Start button, click Programs and see if Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition is listed. If Norton AntiVirus is not installed on your office PC, please call the Help Desk at 825-1112.
If Norton Antivirus is installed but not configured for LiveUpdates please follow the Configuration instructions for Norton Antivirus Live Updates.
Checks the boot record for viruses at system startup.
Checks programs for viruses at the time you use them.
Scans all local hard drives for viruses once per week.
Monitors your computer for any activity that might indicate the work of a virus in action.
Scan files you download from the Internet.
Checks floppy disks for boot viruses when you use them.
MS Windows Updates
Windows 2000 and Windows XP Users
Office computers are configured to check and download when critical windows
system updates are available everyday at 7:00 a.m.
If your computer is on, the updates will be downloaded at 7:00 a.m. and since restarting your system is necessary you will be prompted with a window asking if you want to restart your computer. Please close all programs and restart your computer for the updates to take effect.
If your computer is turned off when the critical updates are scheduled to be downloaded, the updates will download after you turn your system on and prompt you to restart your computer. Please restart your computer for the updates to be effective.
Please note that to receive the scheduled critical updates every week, you must login to the campus domain.
Windows 98 Users
It is extremely essential that
you go to the MS site and install all the available
critical updates at least
once a week.
Scan for Updates - Scans your computer and provides you with a selection of updates tailored just for you.
Critical Updates and Service Packs - installs the critical updates needed.
Windows 95 Users
This does not apply to Windows 95 users.
Note: If you receive a warning message from Norton AntiVirus that
a virus is quarantined or cannot be removed from your system, please contact
the Help Desk at x1112 immediately.
