What is a web browser?
Web browsers are software applications that locate and display Web pages. One of the most popular browsers is Microsoft Internet Explorer. It's a graphical browser, meaning it displays graphics as well as text. In addition, most modern browsers can present multimedia information, including sound and video, though they require plug-ins for some formats.
Internet Explorer isn't the same as Windows Explorer, a file management tool for Windows users.
How do I determine which browser I am using?
- To discover which browser you're using:
- Go to the menu across the top of the browser window.
- Select the Help menu item.
- Select About... to see the browser name and version.
- If you're using a browser other than the full release of Internet Explorer, look for menu options similar to Support and then About. Microsoft E-Learning refers to all browsers that aren't the standard version of Internet Explorer as modified browsers.
Note: Microsoft E-Learning doesn't support Beta versions of any browsers. Use only final browser releases when accessing Microsoft E-Learning.
Are there any special browser settings that are required to use E-Learning?
Cookies are messages (files) written in your browser by your server. When you return to a Webpage, your browser sends the "cookie" information to the server. This information identifies you, and your preferences, making it possible to alter a Web site to your needs.
Microsoft E-Learning uses cookies to ensure the privacy of your account when you enter secure parts of our site. Cookies allow you to login, participate in sessions, and access chat areas. When you quit your browser, the cookie will be erased from memory.
To accept cookies Internet Explorer 7.0
- Select Internet Options from the Tools menu. The Internet Options dialog box opens.
- Click the Privacy tab.
- Click on the Advanced button located in the middle of the dialog box
- In the Advance Privacy Settings dialog box, make sure
sure that the circle in front of the following options is
selected:
- Override automatic cookie handling
- First-part cookies - accept
- Third party cookies - accept
- Make sure that there is a check mark in the box in front of Always allow session cookies
- Click OK to save settings
- Click OK to close the Advanced Privacy Settings dialog box and Internet Options
JavaScript must be enabled. E-Learning makes extensive use of JavaScript. Internet Explorer uses ActiveX to implement JavaScript.) JavaScript is a scripting language used by Web designers to design dynamic, interactive Web sites that can display different information to different viewers accessing the same URL.
To enable JavaScript in Internet Explorer 7.0:
- From the Tools menu, select Internet Options
- In the dialog box, select the Security tab
- Be sure that your Security level is set to Medium. The ActiveX controls that are necessary to use E-Learning are set by default in the medium security level. Click Default Level to view the security level slide.
- Select OK to close the dialog box
Browser Refresh to ensure that you are seeing the latest data on Microsoft E-Learning pages, you must set your browser to refresh every time it loads a page.
To set your Browser to Refresh every time with Internet Explorer 6.0 with SP2:
- From the Tools menu, select Internet Options
- Under Browsing history, select Settings
- Under Check for newer versions of stored pages, select Every time I visit the web page.
- Select OK to close the dialog box
Why am I not able to view all of the course content?
Check to see if you have pop-up blocker software enabled on your computer.
Popup Blockers must be disabled so that you can allow pop-ups from the E-Learning site.
To set your Browser to allow popups with Internet Explorer 7.0 :
- From the Tools menu
- Select Pop-up Blocker and select allow popups
What is a Plug-in?
A plug-in is a small program or application that has specific features or performs certain functions. When you access a file or Web page that requires a plug-in (like a video clip or sound file), the plug-in launches automatically if it's already installed in your browser. If not, you are usually prompted to download the necessary plug-in. After you have successfully installed the plug-in, you can then access the web page in its entirety.
If the courses on the site require a plug-in, your system is automatically scanned to locate the necessary application. If the necessary application is not found, a message is displayed with a link to download the plug-in.
Will these E-Learning modules work on a Mac?
