Creating/Editing Faculty Web Pages

A web page is a great tool for faculty to use to easily disseminate contact information for their students (i.e. office hours, office phone extension, e-mail address, etc.), distribute course documents (syllabi, assignments, handouts, etc.) and offer helpful resource links to sites on the Internet.

This workshop will work with a pre-designed faculty template that will allow you to get a basic web page created and published on the web by the end of the session! (Bring any documents or graphics you would like included on your page on a disk with you.)

Note that if you do not have a faculty web folder, you should request one by completing the online form before the workshop.

Microsoft PowerfullPoint - Best Practices

Many faculty are using PowerPoint to supplement their lectures but some instructors have found ways to really turn PowerPoint into an active learning tool. Join this demonstration of exciting ways to use PowerPoint with your students, and bring samples of your own presentations to share with others. You'll get some great ideas and have fun too!

Note: See the University of Minnesota's outstanding website on creative use of PowerPoint for active learning strategies, active lecturing, formative assessment , and effective handouts.

WebCT Primer

WebCT (or Web Course Tools) is a wonderful application that allows faculty to: upload or even create content in a password-protected, web-based environment; communicate with students via e-mail, discussion boards or virtual chats; provide for online student collaboration; and even administer electronic quizzes and surveys that can be automatically randomized for each student and, best of all, automatically graded and recorded in an online grade book. One of the strengths of WebCT is that you can continue to add a few pieces to your course each semester (either your own or publisher-ready content) which builds a wonderful resource for your students. WebCT can also be used for fully online courses.

See complete WebCT documentation and step-by-step instructor's manual.

Wikis and Blogs and Chats...Oh My!

In this session faculty will explore three of the myriad ways of communicating online today. Come and see how your colleagues are using some of these new tools to benefit their students. Wikis (collaborative writing) and blogs (similar to online journaling) are asynchronous tools and chat (like instant messaging) is a synchronous vehicle. Gaining a better understanding of how these work may give you some new ideas to use with your classes.
