" "Teaching is a process of becoming that continues throughout life,
never completely achieved, never completely denied. This is the challenge
and the fun of being a teacher -
there is no ultimate end to the process."
Frances Mayforth
Monthly Meetings
These meetings provide
training in classroom technology and teaching excellence as well as an open
forum for sharing ideas. Topics for each session are generated by the group
and training is provided by faculty/staff with expertise in a particular
area of interest to the group. Contact faculty mentors for more information.
See Tony Basilico's video demo of his
Creating an Excel Grade Book web
workshop.
Next meeting: TBA
Weekly Open Labs
Weekly open labs are available in Lincoln, Warwick and Providence. These
labs provide faculty and staff an opportunity to work on technology-related
projects with support and training from the
Faculty Mentors: Kathy Beauchene (Flanagan) and Tony Basilico (Knight).
Kathy and Tony are also available to provide individual assistance.
In addition, the IT Instructional Support team of Norm Grant
and Gene Grande are available for one-on-one help or small group workshops.
Video Archives
Beginning with the meeting on Sept. 24, 2002, we have videotaped some segments
from the meetings that will be available for loan from the LRC.
Subcommittees
Three subcommittees have formed due to interest from faculty. If you are
interested in participating in any of these committees please send e-mail
to the contact person.
International Initiatives - contact
Bill Pellicio
Faculty interested in pursuing collaborative projects or faculty exchanges
with Dominican Republic, Senegal or Cambodia.
Several international
opportunities for faculty and staff are available, including:
-
Dominican Republic:
CCRI’s cooperative
agreement with La Universidad de la Tercera
Edad (UTE) include opportunities for
e-mail exchange, future video conferencing, faculty exchanges, etc.
-
Cambodia:
A group will be traveling to Cambodia at the end of the semester
(shortly after Christmas). The trip will include bringing medical
supplies, equipment, and medicine organized through the Black River
Project (a medical relief organization affiliated with Beth Israel
Hospital). The trip will allow us the opportunity to explore health and
welfare systems and the system of professional education in health and
human services in the country. For those unable to travel, there are
many opportunities (a great service learning project): organizing
donated equipment, preparing packets of toiletries for families,
fundraising, etc. The office of Life Long Learning is also offering a
course in basic Khmer (the Cambodia Language) that is being taught by
Dr. Kea Sang. Dr. Sang is a physician from Cambodia who has also
organized the relief mission. For more information, contact Bill
Pellicio.
-
Liberia:
The Liberian Association of Rhode Island is organizing itself to respond
to the current crisis in Liberia. One project involves developing
services for Liberians that are presently living in Rhode Island and for
an expected group of refugees that will be resettled in Rhode Island
(There are currently 6,000 Liberians in a refugee camp in the Ivory
Coast that are being prepared for resettlement; Rhode Island is one of
the states targeted to receive them). This includes basic orientation,
housing, health, etc. as well as support systems to help refugees cope
with the trauma of violence, rape, and torture they have experienced. A
second project includes developing a relief mission with the Black River
Project similar to the Cambodia Project. For more information, contact
Bill Pellicio.
Distance Learning Discussion - contact
JoAnn Warren
Those faculty who are teaching fully online courses who would like to
discuss best practices and strategies.
Graduate Degree/Research Support Group -
contact Christine Manville
The graduate support group
will meet on Thursdays throughout the Fall 2004 semester. We plan to have
an open work group the entire day. People can consult with each other, cry
on each other’s shoulders, or work independently with the support of others
beside them. Room 4100
has been reserved for Thursdays. For those
who do not want a work group, we have lunch together every Thursday (Knight
Campus faculty dining room). The group is open to anyone who is
interested. Our current membership includes faculty/staff working on PhDs,
Masters, thinking about graduate programs, recent graduates who come to
support and encourage us, and some working on
research projects who benefit from the structure of working in a group
setting. Anyone interested can just show up or get on our official
list. Contact is Bill Pellicio.
Teaching Forum
Faculty responses on the Spring 2004 Academic Technology Advisory
Committee (ATAC) Faculty Technology Survey indicated interest in a
virtual forum to share ideas and information on teaching and learning.
As a result, ATAC has sponsored a Pipeline Group called Teaching Forum
for interested faculty. Anyone who would like to participate in this e-mail
discussion can join the group by logging in to their Pipeline account,
clicking on the groups icon, selecting the Organizations and then the
Teaching Forum. Just click on the grey Join Group button and you'll be
added to the list. Note that this forum space is also used for the
Technology Tip of the Week feature offered by the Department of
Information Technology.
