Topic: Advantages of Video Streaming
Video streaming is a way to make relevant video material available to
students for viewing in the classroom, computer labs and libraries, and from
home. Students do not have to make a special trip to the library or wait
their turn to view a single copy of a video tape or DVD. A fast Internet
connection and a computer is all that is needed to view a video that is
streamed. Students can view the video as often as needed or replay
individual segments.
This will be a discussion and demonstration of video streaming by Ed Madonna
and Dr. William Johnson. Both will discuss their reasons for streaming video
to supplement class work. We will discuss the technical process of using
existing video or producing new content for streaming. Digitizing and
editing the video as well as the process of transferring them to the CCRI
streaming server for student access will also be covered.
The video demonstrations will include math tutorials that have been
available at our Math labs and have recently been made available to CCRI
students online. We will also view dissection video clips produced by Dr.
Johnson for his classes and other Biology students that wish to view them.

Creating an Excel Grade Book
Tony did CCRI's first web conferenced workshop on the process of creating
an Excel Grade Book from the Pipeline class list. He also prepared a
follow-up
video demonstration on the process for faculty that is available for
review.

Presenter: Michael Vieira, Assistant Dean, Bristol Community College
Michael J. Vieira is the assistant dean for the Division of Business and
Information Management at Bristol Community College in Fall River, MA.
An early adopter of distance learning, he teaches all of his classes with an
on-line option using WebCT. He talked to participants about his adventures
on-line both as a teacher and learner and shared some of the unique distance
learning opportunities at BCC including student option and umbrella courses.

Kristin conducted a 1-hour virtual
workshop to inform faculty about WebCT course content that is available as a free
resource for all instructors. Did you know that the textbook you are
currently using likely has course content already developed on the WebCT
platform? Participants learned about e-Packs and saw some demos of various e-Packs
in an array of disciplines. Also were exposed to strategies in how to use this content to teach a
web enhanced, hybrid or online classes. This workshop was virtual,
which meant that participants could
attend remotely from their home or office.
