Digital Photo Participation Cards / Online Student Photo Gallery
FrontPage has an easy way to create groups of images to display on the web, either from your faculty web page, Pipeline course or WebCT course space. One fun application of this feature is to create an online student photo gallery that can be featured in your online course to help students get to know each other.
Using this same process, you can also create participation/attendance cards to use with your face-to-face class to help you get to know and keep track of your students.
These instructions are for PowerPoint 2003. If you are using an earlier version, you may see a few minor differences in the instructions.

Step 1The first day of classes or during your orientation, take each student’s picture and write down their names in order as you take each picture. (Note: faculty can borrow a digital camera from IT on every campus.) You can also have students take each other's pictures if you have the time. |

Step 2Put your photo disk in your floppy drive or connect your camera to your computer. |

Step 8Select your first file. Note that you can adjust the size of the thumbnail for each photo. (A thumbnail is a miniature duplicate of the original image that is featured in a gallery. This feature allows for faster download speeds for users. If a user wants a closer look at an image he or she just double-clicks on the thumbnail and it expands to original size.) Normally you would have to create two versions of every photo yourself but lucky for you this feature of FrontPage does it automatically for you! |

Step 9Scroll down to the Caption box and type in some descriptive words. These will show up with the image in the finished gallery if you chose the correct layout. Note: If you did not choose a layout that displays the caption and description, you can always go back and switch to a different layout. |

Step 10Continue adding the rest of your images repeating the above steps, adding a caption and adjusting the thumbnail sizes as you add each picture. When you’ve added all your images for the gallery, click on the OK button at the bottom of the window. |
Step 11For in-class use: Print out your photo gallery pages on any printer (you can use the color printer in any of the CITs). Cut out each picture with caption and glue it to individual large index cards. Use these cards to quickly learn your students' names and keep track of attendance. Shuffle them each class and use them to call on students to answer questions. Note how well prepared the student was with an answer on the index card, which then informs your participation grade at the end of the semester. |
Step 12For online use: Upload these photo gallery pictures into your WebCT course, your faculty web folder or your Pipeline course (depending on size). Remember if your gallery is over 1 mg. you will not be able to upload it to Pipeline due to size restrictions. If this is the case, one option is to upload your gallery into your faculty web folder and simply link to it from your Pipeline course. Remember that you’ll need to upload all the image files that are linked from the gallery page. Always keep bandwidth in mind. Sometimes it’s better to create several pages of images that are smaller in size than one big page. |

Important Note: If you would like to link to a gallery in your faculty web folder from either your faculty web page or Pipeline course and the gallery contains student images or original work you need to have students sign an authorization form allowing you permission to display their content on an open website.
That’s it! You’re done!
