Step 1Sign on to the computer. In the Warwick CIT sign in as banner, no password is needed. Go to the Start Menu and under All Programs open Adobe Photoshop. |
Step 2In Photoshop under File select Import then Nikon Scan 3.1 Wizard. When the Nikon Scan Wizard has opened Tool Palette 1 may open with it. If not you will have to open it. |

Step 3To open the tool palette click on the Tools button. Then select and click Palette 1 from the drop down menu. |

Step 4Type in 96 PPI (Pixels Per Inch) if your image will be used for computer and Web applications. Raising resolution to 200 PPI is preferable for printing. Set the scale to 500% in most cases to enlarge your 35mm slide. |

Step 5Insert your slide in the Nikon Coolscan III vertically. The slide should go in top first and facing up. Horizontal photos can be rotated later. |

Step 6Click the preview button for your slide image to appear. |

Step 7Left click and drag the mouse across the image to crop the portion of the slide that you wish to scan. Only the image within the broken line will be scanned. |

Step 8Click on the Scan button. |

Step 9The image will be scanned and appear in Photoshop. You can Scan another image, or to save your scanned image, close the Scan Wizard. Leave Photoshop open as you will need to save your image in Photoshop. You can also rotate and crop your image before saving. |

Step 10Under File select Save As. After naming your image and locating the drive/folder to save to, choose the type of Format to save as from the Save Options drop down box. GIFs are best for graphics, JPEGs for photos and Tiffs for good quality printing. |

Step 11When saving as a JPEG in Photoshop the Image Options window appears for compression adjustment. This allows for increasing or decreasing the file size. Smaller files are easier to use for web and email. Larger files provide higher quality. Photos are previewed for quality while adjusting the file size. |
