Adding Graphics and Animations to a Presentation

You can include graphics in a PowerPoint presentation by inserting them. A graphic can enhance a presentation by depicting an idea that may be difficult to describe or by making the presentation more visually appealing.

Graphic images that can be used in PowerPoint include simple drawn shapes, clip art, and pictures (such as scanned images that are saved as files).

One method of adding graphics to a document is to use the Clip Gallery, which contains numerous images called clip art. Another method is to insert a picture from a file.

Inserting Clip Art images

When a clip is inserted, squares appear around the picture called sizing handles. The sizing handles indicate that the picture or object is selected. Once inserted, a clip can be moved and resized. You can insert more than one clip onto a slide.

Inserting a picture

You can move a graphic to another position on a slide by dragging it to a new location. Positioning a graphic is a good way to place it in the best possible location to enhance the slide text. The mouse pointer must be a four-headed arrow to move a graphic.

Inserting Animated Graphics

In addition to including static graphics, clip art or photos in your presentation, you can add animation by inserting animated GIF files. GIF files are Graphics Interchange Format graphic files.

Animated GIFs can be added from the Motion Clips page in the Microsoft Clip Gallery or from the Insert Movie dialog box. Note that you will not see the animation until you go into Slide Show view.

Adding Special Effects

Animation effects can help you introduce individual lines of text into a slide during a presentation. You can also use animation effects to introduce other objects, such as charts, graphics, and tables, into a slide.

Using Slide Transitions

A transition is how PowerPoint advances from one slide to the next during an on-screen slide show. You can choose from over 40 different special effects to move between slides.

Using an Animation Scheme

An animation scheme adds a preset visual effect to the text on a slide. Ranging from subtle to exciting, each scheme usually includes an effect for the slide title and an effect that is applied to the bullets or paragraphs in a slide.
