How to scan graphics and pictures with the Microtek ScanMaker 6400XL flatbed scanner.

Instructions and Screenshots
Step 1

Place your art work on the scanner bed and sign on to the computer. In the Warwick CIT sign in as banner, no password is needed.

Go to the Start Menu and under All Programs open Adobe Photoshop.

Step 2

In Photoshop under File select Import then Microtek Scan Wizard Pro.

If you are scanning color images select RGB Colors from the Type drop down box in the Scan Wizard. This setting will work for most applications.

Resolution should be set to 96 PPI (Pixels Per Inch) if your image will be used for computer and Web applications.  Raising the resolution to 200 PPI is preferable if you plan to print your image.

On the Scan Wizard Pro box click on Overview. This will preview everything on the scanner bed.

Left click and drag the mouse over the portion of the image that you wish to scan. A red and white marquee will highlight the area to be scanned.

In the Settings box, increase or decrease the Output size for your image. An image size percentage can be typed or selected from the Image Size drop down box. A specific size can be typed under Output. Selecting 100% will retain the original image size.

Click on the Scan button near the top of the Wizard.

The image will be scanned and appear at left in Photoshop.  You can scan another image, or save your scanned image.

To save your image close the Scan Wizard but leave Photoshop open as you will need to save your image in Photoshop.

You can also rotate or crop your image before saving.

Under File select Save As. After naming your image and locating the drive/folder to save to, choose the type of file to save as. 

GIFs are best for graphics, JPEG for photos Tiffs for good quality printing.

When saving as a JPEG in Photoshop a compression adjustment window appears.  This allows for increasing or decreasing the file size. Smaller files may be easier to use on the web or in e-mail. Larger files will be of higher quality.  The photo can be previewed for quality while adjusting the file size.

Click OK to save your photo.
