Optimizing Photographs with Photoshop
Rotate, crop, and compress your images using Adobe Photoshop

Step 1Open Adobe Photoshop. |
Step 2In Photoshop under File select Open. |

Step 3Then browse to find the images that you will be working with. |

Step 4Select the image and click Open. |

Step 5To rotate your image, Under Image select Rotate Canvas. To make major rotations, select 180 degrees, 90 degrees CW, or 90 degrees CCW. For smaller adjustments select Arbitrary. |

Step 6Selecting Arbitrary, activates the Rotate Canvas box. Type in the degree of angle you wish to rotate, select Clockwise or Counter clockwise and click OK. This is useful for subtle changes, for instance to straighten the horizon. |

Step 7To crop your image select the marquee from the toolbar. |

Step 8Drag your mouse across the image to select the area that you wish to keep. Everything outside of this area will be eliminate |

Step 9Under Image select Crop. If you make a mistake in cropping, under Edit select Undo. |

Step 10Under File select Save As. After naming your image and selecting the drive/folder to save to, choose a format to save as. GIFs are best for graphics, JPEG for photos, Tiffs for HiRes printing. |

Step 11When saving as a JPEG in Photoshop a compression adjustment box appears. This allows for increasing or decreasing the file size. Smaller files may be easier to use on the web or in e-mail. Larger files will be of higher quality. The photo is previewed for quality while adjusting the file size with the mouse and slider. Click OK to save your photo |
