Introduction to Discoverer Viewer


Discoverer Viewer is a reporting tool that is used to run reports from Banner.  A few key people in most departments have access to Discoverer to run the reports to which they have security access.  This is an introductory tutorial that includes how to:

Step 1 Navigate to the Discoverer Link

Open Internet Explorer and go to the Banner page.  Click on the Discoverer Login link in the upper left corner.

A separate browser window will open with the Discoverer Viewer start page.

The first time you use Discoverer on your computer, some software needs to be installed.  Click yes or install to all of the prompts.

Step 2 Login to Discoverer

Once Discoverer Viewer starts, you should get a Connect to OracleBI Discoverer box where you can log in. Enter your Banner username and password in the appropriate area.  In the Database area enter Dora, then click 'Go'.

Step 3 Expand Workbook to see Worksheets

A box should open with a list of Workbooks that you have access to.  A workbook may contain several worksheets (reports).  Click on the arrow with the plus next to the workbook name to see the associated worksheet(s).

Step 4a Enter parameters for the report

If the report requires that you enter parameter values before running, for example to run the report for a specific term, you will be prompted to enter these values.

Click 'Go' to run the report.

Some worksheets have a parameter list that can be used to see the available codes associated with the parameter. To select a parameter, scroll through the 'Available' list on the left. Double-click the needed value. To select multiple values single click while holding down the CTRL key then click the 'Move' button in the center of the two lists.

Once the needed value(s) appears in the 'Selected' list on the right, click the 'Select' button.

To run the report click 'Go'.

Step 5 View more records

If the report has more than 25 rows click the 'Down' link to view the next page. Or click the 'Up' link to view the previous page.

The value appearing in the drop-down box between the 'Up' and 'Down' links determines how many rows forward or backwards the next page will display. If '25 Rows', the default value, is visible than the next 25 rows will be displayed but if '100 Rows' is selected rows 101 - 125 will be displayed.

Step 6 Run another report in the same workbook

To run another report that is in the same workbook, click on the report from the 'Worksheets' box on the left side of the screen.  You may be prompted to enter parameters for this report.

Step 7 Open another workbook

Click the 'Workbooks' breadcrumb above the worksheet title to return to the list of available reports.

Step 8 Print the report

To print a report that you are already viewing, click 'Printable Page' from the 'Actions' box on the left side of the screen.

The 'Printable Page Options' screen will appear.  Click the 'Page Setup' tab to change some basic setting like page orientation or margins.

To preview the first two pages of the report click 'Preview Sample'.  To view the entire report click 'Printable PDF' - skip to Step 11.

Click 'Open PDF to view sample.' The PDF will open in another browser window. Close the window.

If more changes are needed click 'Print options'. Repeat Steps 9 -10 until desire format is found.

To view and print your entire document select the 'Click to view or save' button.

A new browser window opens. To print the PDF click either the printer icon or click File > Print. To return to Discoverer Viewer, close the PDF window with the red 'X'.

Step 13 Select printer and options

The Print dialog box appears.  Click the down arrow to select a printer other than your default printer. 

Click 'OK'. To return to Discoverer Viewer, close the window with the red 'X'.

Step 14 Return to worksheet or select a new workbook or exit Discoverer viewer.

After printing, either log out of Discoverer viewer by clicking the 'Exit' link in the upper right-hand corner. Or Choose a new workbook by selecting the 'Workbook' breadcrumb, or return to your current worksheet/ workbook by clicking 'Return to worksheet.'
